Prescribing CaloDrink: Information for Healthcare Professionals
CaloDrink is a fully balanced nutritional drink (FSMP) in vanilla and strawberry flavors (new from the end of October 2026); chocolate is expected to follow from January 2027. The vanilla flavor is listed in the Lauer-Taxe as a dietetic product under § 31 SGB V. It can be prescribed on a standard prescription (Form 16) under the German Medicines Act (AM-RL), Section I, §§ 18–26 (Enteral nutrition). This page summarizes what you need for a compliant prescription.

Intended Use and Indication
“For the dietary treatment of existing or imminent disease-related malnutrition when adequate normal nutrition is not or is not sufficiently possible.”
Intended use according to the declaration at the BVL (vanilla flavor, procedure JPAR JGZ2 CP67 8CKH, 12 March 2026)Typical clinical situations:
- Chewing and swallowing disorders — dysphagia, post-stroke, head and neck tumors
- Loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss — especially in geriatric patients
- Increased energy and nutrient requirements — malignancy, postoperatively, convalescence
- Restricted food intake due to gastroenterological diseases
How to Prescribe
Form and Specification
Form 16 (standard prescription) — no special form is required. On the prescription, state the product name, pack size, and PZN. Specifying the PZN helps avoid follow-up questions and dispensing errors at the pharmacy.
Co-payment
Statutory co-payment under § 61 SGB V: 10% of the dispensing price, at least €5, at most €10 — never more than the cost of the product. Co-payment exemptions apply as with medicines.
Cost-Effectiveness
Reimbursement is indication-dependent and assessed on a patient-by-patient basis; no diagnosis or positive list exists for health insurance funds. The decisive factor is the documented indication according to AM-RL §§ 18–26.
Application and Dosage
As a supplement to normal nutrition: 1–3 bottles daily (300–900 kcal); for complete nutrition: 5–7 bottles daily (1,500–2,100 kcal). Ready to drink, no preparation required; once opened, store in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours.

Currently, only the four PZN listed above for the ready-to-drink 200-ml bottle in vanilla flavor are eligible for prescription. For strawberry, this will apply only after confirmation of the § 31 designation in the Lauer-Taxe. Dispensing a different PZN may result in the pharmacy being required to re-prescribe.
Composition and Product Profile
Per 100 ml, the same for all flavors: 150 kcal · 6.0 g protein · 5.0 g fat · 20 g carbohydrates. Low in fiber, low in lactose and gluten-free, with MCT fats, 13 vitamins and minerals. Allergens: contains milk, whey and soy protein, as well as fish oil. Not suitable for children under 4 years; only under medical supervision in cases of impaired glucose tolerance. Is CaloDrink eligible for prescription coverage by statutory health insurance?
Yes. CaloDrink Vanilla is listed in the Lauer-Taxe as a balanced diet (dietetic product under § 31 SGB V). Currently, only the four PZN for the vanilla flavor on this page are eligible for prescription. For strawberry, this will follow confirmation of the § 31 designation. Whether it is reimbursed in an individual case depends on the patient’s indication according to AM-RL §§ 18–26.
What flavors are available?
Vanilla, strawberry (new from the end of October 2026) and chocolate (expected from January 2027). Energy, protein, fat and carbohydrates are the same in all flavors (150 kcal and 6.0 g protein per 100 ml). The differences in sugar, fiber and osmolarity are shown in the table above; the PZN table shows the current availability for each pack size.
Do I need a special form or approval from the health insurance fund?
No. It can be prescribed on a standard prescription (Form 16). Prior approval from the health insurance fund is not required, and there is no diagnosis or positive list from which reimbursement could be inferred in advance.
What is the patient’s co-payment?
